Description

One of the main questions in space exploration is whether there is life in space. Astrobiologists try to determine what is required for life, where these conditions may be found in space and what the signs of life we could detect may be. They will design experiments on Earth to simulate conditions we may expect in space.

Routes

An undergraduate degree in a subject such as biology, chemistry, astronomy, geology or physics with a masters or PhD specialising in astrobiology.

Example UK Employers

Imperial College London.

Key Stage 2 Curriculum Links

Science

Living things and their habitats: Astrobiologists try to determine what is required for life, where these conditions may be found in space and what the signs of life we could detect may be.

Evolution and inheritance: Astrobiologists may find it useful to observe evolution in conditions on Earth that are like those in space.

Other

Geography: Astrobiologists know about different climates and biomes that they may find.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum Links

Biology

Structure and function of living organisms: Astrobiologists know what the conditions for life to exist may be in space.

Genetics and evolution: Astrobiologists know how species may have evolved to suit the environments they are in.

Chemistry

The particulate nature of matter: Astrobiologists know about the different states of matter and changes in state that may occur as a result of biological processes.

Chemical reactions: Astrobiologists know about the reactions that may happen with the aid of biological organisms and what the products of these may look like.

The periodic table: Astrobiologists know which elements they may expect to be present for life to exist and the behaviours expected of these elements.

Other

Geography: Astrobiologists know about different climates and biomes that they may find.
