Chosen career:

Flight Software

Interests:

Computing

Skills: CollaborativeHard-workingLogical
Computing and engineering illustration
Description

Flight software engineers make programs that control everything once the spacecraft is out of Earth’s atmosphere, such as cameras or solar panels. This includes making scientific measurements, ways for astronauts to control the spacecraft and ways for the spacecraft to dock with other spacecraft such as a space station.

Routes

A STEM degree is usually required. Examples of your own coding projects will be very useful.

Airbus

Key Stage 2 Curriculum Links

Science

Properties and changes of materials: Flight software engineers know how the materials of the spacecraft might change in different conditions and account for this in their software.

Earth and space: Flight software engineers know about the environments the spacecraft will be in and what the astronauts might need to do in them.

Forces: Flight software engineers know about the forces acting on the spacecraft when it is controlled in different ways.

Other

Computing: Flight software engineers write the software for the spacecraft.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum Links

Chemistry

Materials: Flight software engineers know how changes in the materials of the spacecraft may change operations and account for this in their software.

Physics

Motion and forces: Flight software engineers know how forces affect the spacecraft and the motion caused by operation of different control systems.

Matter (inc Space physics): Flight software engineers know about possible environments and scenarios the spacecraft may encounter and write programs to account for this.

Other

Computing: Flight software engineers write the software for the spacecraft.
